Kenya government orders the closure of refugee camps

– – The Kenyan government has ordered for the closure of refugee camps in the country. The authorities have given the UN refugee agency a 14-day ultimatum to close the camps including Dadaab camp, one of the world’s largest refugee camp. The Kakuma camp in the north-west is also among those the government wants the UNHCR to close within the 14-day period. Kenya: High Court to hear petition against closure of Dadaab refugee camp

The High Court in Kenya will on Monday 7 November hear a petition filed by two civil society organizations challenging the government’s decision to close down Dadaab refugee camp and disband the Department of Refugee Affairs (DRA). Amnesty International is participating in the proceedings as an interested party and has filed submissions on Kenya’s obligations under international law to ensure the rights of asylum seekers and refugees.
