Abiy Ahmed faces first test as Ethiopians vote

– – Ethiopians are voting in regional and parliamentary elections as ethnic tensions deepen and hunger worsens. It is the first test of the popular vote for the Ethiopian prime minister, Abiy Ahmed, and his Prosperity Party since he took power in 2018. The polls which were supposed to have been held last August were delayed due coronavirus pandemic. Nearly a fifth of the constituencies aren’t taking part in the election because of insecurity and irregularities. At least 78 people killed in Ethiopian protests

Ethiopian officials say at least 78 people were killed during protests last week over the treatment of a prominent activist. The prime minister’s spokeswoman Billene Seyoum told reporters on Thursday that 409 people had been detained over the unrest. She also revealed that investigations are ongoing and the death toll and number detained could rise. Activist Jawar Mohammed said that police surrounded his home in Addis Ababa and tried to withdraw his government security detail.
