Malawi President Under fire for the Sale of PlaneBLANTYRE –More pressure is piling on President Joyce Banda and her People’s Party led government with human rights activists threatening to engage the Stolen Asset Recovery Unit of (StAR) of the United Nations if government fails to take back the Presidential Jet it traded off in two weeks.

This follows similar calls from the Consumers Association of Malawi (Cama) on the Malawi leader to take back the Jet following revelations that it was traded off to clear a $19.2 million debt government owed Paramount Group.

Malawi Finance MinisterBLANTYRE(MaraPost)—Malawians are yet to know the  truth as to how the proceeds were used as government officials continues giving conflict information with latest being the minister of finance dismissing Joyce Banda’s information that some of the money realized from the Jet sale were used to fund Farm Input Loan Programme (FILP). 

Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday in the afternoon, President Banda told journalists that the proceeds which were realized from the Presidential Jet were used to buy military artillery, maize, medical drugs and fertilizer for the Farm Input Loan Programme.

Raphael KasambaraLilongwe 2014-01-27_ Former Malawi Justice Minister Raphael Kasambara and Principal Secretary in the Office of the President and Cabinet Joster Njanji have been arrested following on-going investigations into how millions of dollars were allegedly looted in government in dubious deals.

“We have today, the 27th of October 2014, arrested Mr. Raphael Kasambara on money laundering offences,” said police spokesperson Rhoda Manjolo.

Khumbo Kachale Malawi VPBLANTYRE — Malawi’s VP, Khumbo Kachale, has announced that the government is cracking down on corruption in the cabinet in the wake of what has become known as the “Cashgate” scandal, in which more than $10 million has been discovered to be missing from public coffers.

Speaking to parliament on Monday, Vice President Kachale said the investigations conducted so far have found massive looting of public finances dating back to 2006.

Banda, southern Africa’s first female president and Africa’s second, has fired Finance Minister Ken Lipenga and Justice Minister Ralph Kasambara. The two are at the centre of investigations into the looting of money in government through fraud and corruption that led to the unprecedented sacking of the cabinet.
