Kenya: Militants attack police station to free terrorists
Militants from Somali-based group Al-Shaabab have attacked a Kenyan police station in Wajir, some 683 kilometres from the capital Nairobi.
Local media reported that the attack by the militants was in an attempt to free some of their colleague terrorists who had been arrested days back.
Daily Nation reported that the attackers stormed the station after two members of the terrorist group were arrested and locked up.
The police station located 13 kilometres from the Somalia border was attacked with heavy artillery, including rocket-propelled grenades.
A police source was quoted by the Newspaper as saying that “The attack was about rescuing two Al-Shabaab suspects we were holding at the station.”
Police command said in a statement that “It was dark and the officers dispersed in different directions from the camp and exchange of fire ensued.”
Due to the gun battle the two suspects the terrorists were attempting to free were killed. Two police officers were also injured in the process.
“We suspect the attackers killed the suspect in custody to conceal some information about Al-Shabaab,” the police source was quoted by Daily Nation.
The Kenyan police command has now launched an investigation into the incident.
