Ghana loses $190m from the US over cancelled power deal

Ghana has lost the second tranche of a grant amounting to $190 million provided by the United States to improve its power supply. This is based on a decision by the government of Ghana to terminate an agreement with the Meralco-led Power Distribution Services over invalid demand guarantees. Increased load-shedding In Zambia dims businesses

In just about two months since Zambia’s electricity supply company, ZESCO Limited, announced an increase of load-shedding hours, from four to eight, the prolonged black-outs are already having adverse effects on various aspects of everyday life and businesses in the country. UK hit by major power cuts, homes and transport affected

Nearly a million people have been affected by a major power cut across large areas of England and Wales, affecting homes and transport networks. National Grid said it was caused by issues with two power generators but the problem was now resolved. Blackouts were reported across the Midlands, the South East, South West and North East of England, and Wales. The government of Ghana has suspended a concession agreement it signed with the Power Distribution Services (PDS). Ghana’s power distributor, the Electricity Company was taken over by the Philippines Meralco Consortium. Tanzania is building fourth largest hydro dam in Africa

Tanzania is starting the process of building the fourth largest hydro dam in Africa and the ninth largest in the world. Tanzanian President John Magufuli is to lay the foundation stone for the construction of Stiegler’s Gorge hydroelectric power project. The project according to government officials will cost $3 billion. The 2,115 megawatts hydroelectric dam when completed will produce 5,920GWh of power annually.
