Ghana foils ‘attempted coup’, suspects arrested

Ghana’s government has said security agencies have been able to foil an attempt to topple the presidency.

It said an operation by security agencies led to the discovery of what is believed to be a weapons manufacturing factory.

The operation and subsequent arrest of suspects took place at a suburb of Ghana’s capital of Accra called Alajo.

In a statement the government said the said weapon factory was located in a building which operates as a medical facility known as Citadel Hospital.

Personnel from Ghana’s Defence Intelligence, Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police Service and Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) raided the facility where a cache of newly manufactured assault rifles and explosives were retrieved.

Intelligence

Sources within Ghana’s security agencies say the operation was based on intelligence which led to surveillance of the facility prior to the raid which took place last week Friday.

Medical Director and owner of the hospital, Dr. Frederick Yao Mac-Palm and his two accomplices – Mr. Ezor Kafui (a local weapon manufacturer) and Mr. Bright Allan Debrah Ofosu (aka BB or ADC) were arrested during the raid.

The three have been in the custody of the BNI since their arrest while investigations continue.

There is also an ongoing intensive search for the arrest of other members of the manufacturing syndicate who had gone into hiding.

Ghana’s Minister for Information Kojo Oppong Nkrumah said in the statement that “The joint operation was to neutralize an elaborate plot targeted at the Presidency, and with the ultimate aim of destabilizing the country.

The arrest and seizure come after fifteen (15) months of surveillance and gathering of evidence on the activities of the prime suspects and others.”

Terrorist organizations

Africafeeds.com gathered that Dr. MacPalm is believed to have strong connections with some terrorist organizations.

Intelligence information gathered by the security agencies indicated that the medical doctor had imported heavy-duty, state-of-the-art bomb and gun manufacturing equipment and explosives into the country which were used in the production.

Ghana since 1992 has not experienced any coup or attempts to destabilize the country.

The latest development according to the government should not put fear in citizens since the security agencies are on top of issues.
