Tanzania asks for mediation over Lake Malawi dispute

Fishermen On Lake MalawiDAR ES SALAAM – Tanzania called on Saturday for an international mediator to resolve a long-standing border dispute with Malawi, conceding the latest talks over territorial rights to Lake Malawi and its potential reserves of oil and gas have failed.

The call comes after Malawi accused its neighbour of intimidating its citizens, halting talks with Tanzania over the ownership of the lake.

Malawi President Joyce BandaBLANTRYE–Malawi’s President Joyce Banda returned home Tuesday after a two-week visit to the U.S. with a confession that the Malawi-Tanzania dispute over Lake Malawi was becoming dangerous and put the lives of Malawian fishermen at risk.

Speaking to journalists at the State House in Lilongwe, Pres Banda said she was saddened to learn that Tanzania has incorporated the lake into their revised map.
