Nigerian youth torch three police stations

Nigerian youth on Wednesday torched three police stations in the south-eastern state of Anambra as they protest against the killing of a taxi motorcyclist.

The youth allege that the taxi motorcyclist was killed by the police.

The victim, Ebere Nwogba, according to local media died on Tuesday night after he was reportedly arrested for operating his motorbike during curfew hours.

Policemen reportedly fired shots to disperse a crowd of onlookers during the incident.

A resident told the media one of the shots hit the victim in the stomach, leading to his injuries and subsequent death.

“The policemen abandoned him and ran away with his motorbike,” said Okafouzu Ugocchukwu, a resident was quoted as saying by the BBC.

The state’s police commissioner, John Abanga, has assured that any officer linked to the victim’s death will be prosecuted.

Angry youth in reacting to the death of Nwogba marched to police stations in the town and those in neighbouring towns, setting them ablaze.
