Speaker Gotani Hara urges support for President Chakwera amidst political tensions

By Burnett Munthali

In a recent address, Speaker of the National Assembly, Gotani Hara, made a compelling appeal for unity and support for President Lazarus Chakwera. Speaking metaphorically, Hara compared the current political situation to cooking nsima, Malawi’s staple food. She emphasized the importance of using the right kind of firewood for cooking to ensure that the dish is properly prepared.

Hara stated, “My parents are here, and I am telling you, a person who is cooking nsima knows that if the firewood is wet, the fire does not burn well. We do not break the pot on the fire; instead, we gather dry wood to ensure the fire burns properly. I believe you understand me. We need to support President Chakwera, not remove him.”

Her remarks reflect a strong stance on the need to support the current leadership rather than seeking to replace it. Hara’s metaphor highlights the necessity of providing the right conditions for effective leadership, rather than disrupting the process. The call to assist rather than undermine President Chakwera underscores a commitment to constructive support amidst ongoing political challenges.
