South Africa: Man killed after police shot into student protesters

– –

One man has been killed during a protest by students at the University of Witwatersrand on Wednesday.

South African police had fired rubber bullets and stun grenades to disperse the protesters who are demanding changes to registration and financial aid policies.

The man killed wasn’t a student, according to officials. The man was caught in the crossfire right after being treated by at the My Clinic health facility.

Tebogo Sedibe, a doctor at the My Clinic health facility in Braamfontein recalled how he tried to save the 35-year-old patient after he was shot.

“My assistant called and I put on my PPE and went outside and I found him lying on that spot where he was,” Sedibe told local media.

Sedibe added that “When I found him he was gasping – that’s a sign of the end of life. I tried to resuscitate him by doing CPR compression on him but unfortunately, it was not successful.”

The University students, in Johannesburg, have been protesting since the beginning of this week.

During these protests, they have blocked roads and caused general disruption as they allege financial exclusion by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme.

The scheme has run out of money and there’s no budget available to assist new students to register for the academic year.
