Ghana: Schools to reopen from mid-January

– –

Schools in Ghana are reopening from January 15 after ten months of closure.

In March last year, the government of Ghana ordered the closure of schools from the basic to the tertiary levels after the country recorded its first cases of Covid-19.

But President Akufo-Addo has announced that it is now safe to reopen schools from mid-January starting with students at the basic level.

“We are satisfied that in the current circumstances the reopening of our schools is safe. So, from 15th January our children in Kindergarten, Primary and Junior High in both private and public schools will be back in schools” he said.

According to President Akufo Addo students in senior high schools will also return to school from January 18 without the running of the double track system for first year students.

“All SHS 1 students will start class from 10th March and all the students embarking on the single track academic calendar.

Their seniors in SHS 2 and SHS 3 will however, return to school from 18th January. I must stress that SHS 3 students like SHS 1 students will no longer run the double track system” he emphasized.

Meanwhile students in universities and other tertiary institutions who earlier returned to school to complete their academic work are to return fully from January 9.

Ghana currently has 879 active cases of Covid-19 with over 54,000 recoveries and 336 deaths.
