Ghana: Man beats lover to death over $2

A 30-year-old man has beaten his girlfriend to death following a misunderstanding over $2.6 (GHc15).
Police in a town of Tafo Pankrono in Ghana’s Ashanti region told a court that the suspect Ebenezer Korang gave $32 (GHC 185) to his girlfriend, Abigail Adoma, for safekeeping.
When Korang asked the deceased to return the money at a meeting point in town, Abigail instead asked him to come over to the house for the money.
Police said when Korang eventually got home to retrieve the money from the victim, she gave out only $29 (GHC 170) instead of the $32 (GHC 185).
An argument ensued between the two lovers due to the inability of Abigail to return the remaining $2.6 dollars (GHC 15).

The suspect then allegedly hit his lover who fell on a cement block machine and collapsed. She was pronounced dead upon reaching the hospital.
Ebenezer Korang 30, a mason appeared in court over the crime and was remanded into custody.
A court Magistrate Court in Ghana’s Ashanti Region asked that Korang reappears before on March 30, for a ruling.
This incident adds to spate of deaths of women in the hands of their partners in Ghana in recent weeks.

There has been a public uproar in Ghana over these with two women dieing in the hands of their abusive male partners within 48 hours this month.
In the first case, an Accra based business executive was arrested after he allegedly assaulted the wife, leading to his wife.
The second case involves a local area manager of the country’s Youth Employment Agency who has also been arrested after beating his girlfriend to death.
Statistics from the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit show that Ghana records over 3,000 cases of assault annually.
Ghana’s Ministry of Gender and Social Protection has launched an app and a service provision centre to support victims of domestic violence.
