‘Create jobs for your citizens’ to stop xenophobic attacks – SA diplomat
The South African High Commissioner to Ghana is proposing to African governments to create jobs for their nationals to stop them from migrating to South Africa.
Lulu Xingwana believes this is the best way of stopping the frequent attacks on other African nationals who have migrated to South Africa to seek greener pastures.
The latest wave of attacks have reportedly left five people dead with Nigeria boycotting the World Economic Forum ongoing in Johannesburg and recalling it’s Ambassador.
Speaking to Accra based Starr FM in Ghana, Lulu Xingwana said poverty and lack of jobs are the root causes of the perennial problem.
“And this starts from poverty, all of our countries must create jobs and opportunities for their people so that we don’t all flock to one country because the one country would not be able to cope.”
She disclosed that many foreign nationals working in South Africa are dealing in fake products and flouting the country’s laws.
According to Lulu Xingwana the riots cannot be classified as xenophobic attacks, stressing that many of the viral photographs and videos are fake.
“I won’t call these xenophobic attacks. This is crime and we must deal with both South Africans and foreigners who are criminals.
In Ghana shops of Nigerian traders are being shut down. Isn’t that xenophobic attacks? So why South Africa? ”
The Ambassador described the reprisal attacks on SA businesses in other countries as unfortunate.
