Zimbabwe’s foreign affairs minister dies from Covid-19

Zimbabwe’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Sibusiso Moyo, has died from Covid-19, according to a statement from the government.

The minister died from the virus at a local hospital with President Emmerson Mnangagwa eulogising him in a statement.

President Mnangagwa said Mr. Moyo was a “devoted public servant and a true hero”.

“He fought his entire life so that Zimbabwe could be free,” the president added.

Two cabinet ministers in Zimbabwe, Ellan Gwaradzimba and Perrance Shiri, have also died over the last six months. Mr Shiri died from Covid-19.

The late Moyo was a major general who was the face of the military takeover which ousted former President Robert Mugabe.

Moyo was the one who appeared on television, to ask Zimbabweans to remain calm and assure them that only “criminals” were being targeted.

Covid 19 cases doubled in two months from over 8374 at the start of November, to over 14084 currently.

More than 370 virus-related deaths have also been record in the country since the outbreak of the pandemic.
