UN livid over the killing of civilians by peacekeepers in DR Congo

– –

The United Nations(UN) has expressed outraged over the killing of some civilians in the DR Congo by some peacekeepers.

Two civilians died whilst fifteen others sustained injuries when the peacekeepers opened fire at a border crossing.

Frustration over what residents see as an inability by the peacekeeping force to stop attacks by armed groups in the region erupted into violent protests last week.

The protesters attacked two of Monusco’s bases in Goma and Butembo, where three UN peacekeepers were killed.

Some of the peacekeepers have been arrested in connection with the shooting of civilians. A government spokesperson Patrick Muyuya said the incident is being investigated.

“The government appeals to the Congolese people in general to stay calm, and particularly in Kasindi and the entire province of North Kivu,” he said in a statement.

In a statement, UN Secretary Antonio Guterres called for accountability after the incident, which happened as the soldiers forced their way across the border from Uganda into eastern DR Congo.

Video footage appears to show an argument taking place before troops in the UN convoy begun shooting, sending people running for cover.

Over the last week there have been deadly protests against the UN mission, which many feel has failed to protect people from armed attacks.

Meanwhile a tribute ceremony has been held for four UN peacekeepers killed during the anti-UN protests at a base in the city of Goma.

A tribute is also being paid to another peacekeeper who died in the country while fighting the M23 rebel group.

They all had worked for UN peacekeeping mission, Monusco, for less than six months. They include Moroccans and Indian nationals.
