What excites many users is the option to have ready-made follower lists from the word-go, so you don’t lose your Instagram friends.

Threads also allows posts with texts of up to 500 characters long and include photos or videos that are up to five minutes long.

“I think the world needs this kind of friendly community,” Zuckerberg said in a separate post on Instagram after the app went live. “And I’m grateful to all of you who are part of Threads from day one.”

Meta is bidding to take on Twitter after months of turmoil leading to mass layoffs, technical glitches and controversy over moderation. Many advertisers have left the platform.

Threads is for available in 100 countries, but not in the European Union due to guidelines for complying with some of its new laws coming into effect next year.
