Malawi:Atupele Muluzi Arrested
This arrest follows on the heels of witnesses say angry residents attacking a police station after police teargassed a crowd of hundreds who gathered at a Muluzi political rally in the capital Lilongwe.
Police spokesman Dave Chingwalu says Atupele Muluzi did not have permission to hold the gathering, but Muluzi says he did.
Concern that President Bingu wa Mutharika is intolerant of criticism and violating human rights has led to protests and strained relations between Malawi, and its foreign donors agitating to cause trouble.
At least 19 people were killed by police when anti-government demonstrations last year degenerated into looting.
