Zimbabwe tops Africa’s literacy rate as Malawi trails at position 28

Zimbabwe has held pole position since 2010, taking over from Tunisia which is now ranked number 15.

This is despite the economic challenges the country has endured in the last decade due to the West’s illegal economic sanctions that curtailed Government’s capacity to fund the education sector.

The embargo chipped away at investments made in education since 1980, but the sound policies initiated by President Mugabe that devoted the largest chunk of the national budget to education ensured that the education system remained intact.
