SA Airways crew held in Hong Kong over drug offences
Two South African Airways (SAA) flight attendants have been detained in Hong Kong on suspicion of drug trafficking.
They are accused of carrying cocaine worth $1.9m to the Asian country.
The two flight attendants have been in detention since their reported arrest last month.
Hong Kong officials say the substance was found with them, but investigations are ongoing into the case.
The airline has said that the case is being investigated, but insisted it was “intolerant of any criminality by any one of its employees”.
SAA spokesperson Tlali is quoted by local media News24 as saying that “The two employees were part of the crew on two separate SAA flights that operated from Johannesburg to Hong Kong. The flights landed in Hong Kong on September 22 and 24”
“In the incident involving the first flight, a crew member was initially detained for questioning on September 23, while in the second incident a crew member was arrested on arrival on September 24.”
Another local media outlet gave details about the arrests noting that the first suspect was arrested after 12kg of cocaine was found in two plastic bags.
A further 6kg was found a day later that led to the arrest of the second suspect, the IOL reported.
South African officials in Hong Kong have now been asked by the airline to help secure legal representation for the crew members.
