Zambians angry over supply of faulty condoms and gloves

– –

Zambians have expressed outrage over the supply of defective condoms and sterile gloves.

A parliamentary committee has heard how a local company Honey Bee supplied the sub-standard products after it secured a $17m contract.

The audit flagged the award of the contract on an official working day to a company without a physical address.

There are fears that the supply of the defective condoms and sterile gloves has spread sexually transmitted diseases and coronavirus.

A Zambian MP has compared the nationwide distribution of condoms and sterile gloves despite the products failing safety tests as “genocide”.

“What the ministry of health is doing is genocide,” lawmaker Mwansa Mbulakulima told the BBC.

“When you put water in those gloves and condoms, they’re leaking. How many people have died from September as a result of this negligence?”

The gloves were used by frontline workers in the fight against Covid-19.

The company’s director Imran Lunat has accused the auditor general’s office of being bias.
