Uganda: Bobi Wine says he and his family are under house arrest

Uganda’s 2021 defeated presidential candidate Bobi Wine has said that he and his family are “under house arrest and stuck with an 18-month-old baby”.

Since last weekend, soldiers have surrounded the musician-turned politician’s house preventing him from leaving the compound.

There have been instances where visitors to his house were also prevented from entering.

Soldiers claim that he could incite his supporters if he leaves the house.

Bobi Wine came second in the presidential election won by incumbent president, Yoweri Museveni this month.

Final results announced by the Electoral Commission showed that Museveni obtained 58.6 per cent of the votes cast.

Bobi Wine whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi secured 38.4 per cent of the votes but he alleged widespread fraud and rejected the results.

He tweeted a picture with his wife and a baby saying “day six under house arrest and we’re still stuck with an 18 months old baby who had paid a visit to her auntie (my wife ) before we were raided & besieged.”

“The Dad has been denied access to her. We have run out of food and milk. No one is allowed to leave or come into our compound,” he added.

The 38-year-old politician had hoped to defeat President Yoweri Museveni, who has led the country since 1986.

His performance in the election shows his strong support base in the country.
