On 22 August 2022, the African Development Bank and the International Finance Corporation will host an event to discuss challenges around accelerating the clean energy transition, investment opportunities for the private sector, and how development finance institutions are increasing their support to achieve these goals.

As Africa emerges from the Covid-19 pandemic, around 600 million people are still without access to energy. The world is embracing decarbonization, and it is imperative that Africa achieve a fair and just transition to clean energy while addressing its energy poverty. With this energy objective in mind, this event brings together experts from the public and private sectors in Asia and Africa, as well as development finance institutions.

The side event will take place virtually on the sidelines of the 8th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD8) to be held on 27 and 28 August 2022 in Tunis.

The side event on 22 August will include a video message from African Development Bank President, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, to emphasize the importance of sustainable and green growth in the continent. Dr. Kevin. K. Kariuki, Vice-President for Power, Energy, Climate and Green Growth, will deliver opening remarks on the Bank’s strategy in Africa. Mr. Wale Shonibare, Director of the Energy Financial Solutions, Policy and Regulation Department, will join a panel discussion on how African countries can address energy poverty and climate change. Dr. Daniel Schroth, Director of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, will participate in a panel on climate finance and how development finance institutions and the private sector can help bridge the huge financing gap in the continent.
