In a statement South Africa’s presidency said Mr. Ramaphosa tested positive on Sunday, and has delegated all responsibilities to Deputy President David Mabuza.

He reportedly started feeling unwell after attending the funeral of former President FW de Klerk early on Sunday.

The president is in “good spirits” though according to the statement and is being monitored by doctors.

Ramaphosa is fully vaccinated and it is not yet clear if he had been infected with the omicron coronavirus variant.

South Africa is still struggling to vaccinate its citizens with fewer than 30% of South Africans fully vaccinated.

Health officials say the country is experiencing mass “vaccine hesitancy”.
