My goal is to cause positive change through music — Kunle Ayo

Singer, jazz guitarist, singer, songwriter, studio engineer and producer, Kunle Ayo, is convinced that he can bring about positive change through his music.

Speaking on his latest single, Heart Cry, he said, “The situation in African politics is worthy of conversations that we hope will propel change, hence the idea behind the song. We need to think long and hard about the happenings around Africa.

“My music is inspired by the Almighty, the things that happen around me and the need to appreciate who we are as a people. However, there are times I don’t feel like deliberating on issues, and I just write feel-good songs. At other times, it’s the opposite.”

Ayo also stated that living in South Africa for almost two decades had had a profound effect on his music. He said, “Living in South Africa for the past 19 years has had its positive and negative impacts on my life and music. It is a beautiful country but sometimes, some of its citizens leave little to be admired. However, I am humbled by the way I feel received (in South Africa) but there are times when I’m reminded of where I come from.”

Speaking on his plans for his forthcoming album, the instrumentalist said, “I am hoping to release my seventh studio album in Nigeria for the first time. I know people have had access to my music over the years but this one will be officially launched and released in Nigeria.”

Ayo also noted that signing to a recording company could be ‘tricky’. He said, “As an established artiste, the best one can do is to affiliate with big labels. I am not signed to any label but I look forward to doing business with big labels.”
