Ghana: Opposition member elected speaker of parliament amid chaos

Ghanaian lawmakers have elected a member of the opposition party as speaker of the country’s parliament.
Former Member of Parliament, Alban Bagbin was elected after chaos broke out in the lawmaking chamber on Thursday morning.
Soldiers earlier stormed the Parliament during the process towards electing the new speaker.
The military officers had gone into the chamber to try and restore calm following chaos that characterized the voting process.
Elected MPs from the two leading political parties in the country, the National Democratic Congress and the New Patriotic Party had disagreements over the voting procedure.

After the voting process a legislator snatched ballot papers used for the election.
The Member of Parliament for Tema West, Carlos Ahenkorah did the unexpected after the opposition MPs started celebrating the election of candidate Alban Bagbin.
Calm eventually returned to the chamber to make way for the swearing in of the speaker ahead of the swearing in of president-elect, Nana Akufo-Addo.
