Ghana’s government has announced new dates for funeral and burial services for ex-Ghanaian President Jerry Rawlings.

The former president will now be laid in state for public viewing from January 24 to 26 and burial service held on January 27.

A communication from the government to this effect comes weeks after some traditional rulers in Ghana were outraged over the burial arrangements for Mr. Rawlings.

The funeral planning committee last month said funeral of Jerry Rawlings who died at the age of 73 last year, will be held on December 23 at the Independence Square in Accra.

But this was rejected by some traditional leaders from the Volta Region where Rawlings hails from.

Rawlings died on November 12, 2020 in the capital Accra while undergoing medical treatment at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

Mr. Rawlings had in the previous month buried his mother Madam Victoria Agbotui who died at the age of 101.

Rawlings, a former military leader who subsequently became a politician ruled Ghana from 1981 to 2001.

He previously ruled for a brief period in 1979 after leading a military junta.
