Angry Malawian lawmakers reject condom donation

– –

Lawmakers in Malawi have rejected more than 200,000 condoms donated to them by the Aids Health Foundation.

The Members of Parliament are angry about a media publication that said that parliament dispenses about 10,000 condoms every month.

The media report further noted that the Malawian legislature sometimes “runs out of stock” of condoms placed in toilets within the parliament building.

The Deputy Speaker of parliament, Madaliotso Kazombo, has refuted the report and demanded an apology.

The donation was given to the chairperson of the wellness committee, Maggie Chinsinga.

She was quoted as saying that “We host people of very diverse age groups, most of whom are sexually active and it is our responsibility to protect them. There are times when we ran out of stock.”

The leader of majority said MPs can afford condoms

The leader of the majority, Richard Chimwendo has now said that members of parliament do not need the condom donated to them.

Chimwendo said the MPs are injured by the publication and the damage it caused to their reputation.

He said the lawmakers are now capable of buying their own condoms when needed.
