500 volunteers still battling fire on Mount Kilimanjaro

– –

At least 500 volunteers continue to battle a fire on Africa’s tallest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzaia as they hope to bring it under control.

The fire broke out on Sunday, according to the country’s National Parks service.

But the Tanzania National Parks service said in a statement that “efforts to extinguish it are still ongoing,” adding that volunteers have managed to limit the fire’s spread.

Spokesman Pascal Shelutete has said that the area still burning is known as Kifunika Hill.

“A big percentage of the fire has been contained by the multi-agency team which has been working since early morning,” Shelutete said.

According to Shelutete the fire may have been caused by a worker warming food for tourists, saying “Tourism activities are still going on,” and assured them of their safety.
