We can all say the year 2020 was a little more difficult than we anticipated, but we were able to get through it all by listening and dancing to some of the hottest Nigerian songs on our music playlist.
From January right up until now, we have been flooded with loads of music especially as we approached the last quarter of the year. Our A-list artistes put in the good work by dropping some heavy tunes accompanied by an album in most cases. Some new kids on the block came through with chart-topping singles to rival senior colleagues.
Some of the tunes were instant bangers while others grew over time to become some of the hottest Nigerian songs released in 2020.
We had banging singles from Omah Lay, Mayorkun was killing features back to back, Simi gave us one of the biggest Naija songs this year. Despite the pandemic, in the end, it was a good year for Nigerian music.
As usual, the songs on our list were picked based on impact and wide appeal they had across the country. All songs here listed were released during the calendar year.
Here we have the Jaguda hottest Nigerian songs of 2020 listed below in no particular order.
Fem – Davido
Somewhere during the year, Davido decided it was in his best interest to take a break from social media to detox. He was gone for days, days turned weeks and weeks months. Then he returned. In September, Davido dropped a smash hit ‘Fem‘, a lead single from his third studio album ‘A Better Time’. In recent data released by Google, ‘Fem’ was the most searched song in Nigeria 2020. Indeed, it was the number 1 song during the End Sars protest in October.
Duduke – Simi
As it turns out, ‘Duduke‘ is top two biggest songs of Simi’s music career. The singer kept her pregnancy under wraps pending her big reveal with the song ‘Duduke’. In a couple of weeks, the tune became a national hit and currently holds the record as Simi’s most viewed music video on YouTube. Besides being the song for expectant mothers, it breeds positivity and some good energy anytime the music hits you.
Betty Butter – Mayorkun ft. Davido
Mayorkun and his supportive boss Davido make a good team anytime they hop on a song together. The two artistes pulled a massive jam with ‘Betty Butter’, a good contender for collaboration of the year. Upon release, ‘Betty Butter’ by Mayorkun took off without wasting time. The tune is a DJ’s favourite and an actual club banger.
Ginger Me – Rema
Rema continued his fantastic form in 2020 by dishing out bangers back to back. One of his best songs released this year is ‘Ginger Me‘. Google revealed via its year in search 2020 that the song was among the top 10 most searched songs in Nigeria. The tune keeps a mid-tempo and is very addictive which means you will have it on loop.
Woman – Rema
After dropping ‘Ginger Me’, Rema returned within a week and dropped ‘Woman‘, another banger in every sense of the word. The tune took off quite easily as fans loved it for several reasons best known to them. The song received a little bit of criticism here and there but everyone moved past it to enjoy the music for what it is. On this particular song, Rema became one of the first Nigerian musicians to tap into the Amapiano sound from South Africa.
Wonderful – Burna Boy
To usher in his second Grammy-nominated album, ‘Twice As Tall’, Oluwaburna gave us the Afrofunk tune ‘Wonderful‘. Burna Boy worked with Telz who was relatively unknown at the time of the song release. Over time the song climbed the music charts, it was also on the radar of some international media outfits. He also performed the track on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Abule – Patoranking
Patoranking made a strong comeback in 2020 with his song ‘Abule‘, a lead single from his album ‘Three’. The Amari Musiq boss excels at making this ghetto party jams they always come out as bangers. With this song, Telz cemented his place as a go-to Nigerian music producer. This is a certified hit record and the ultimate party jam you’ll hear very often this December. Every serious DJ has ‘Abule’ on their party playlist.
Nobody – DJ Neptune ft Joeboy, Mr Eazi
DJ Neptune put Joeboy and Mr Eazi together on a track and what we have is one of the biggest songs of 2020 titled ‘Nobody‘. When counting some of the best tunes made this year, I’m sure everyone starts with this tune. DJ Neptune couldn’t believe how big his song had become, he further exploited it by dropping a full album of remixes in Hausa, Igbo, Caribbean etc.
MJ – Bad Boy Timz
Olorunyomi Oloruntimilehin of Anonymous Music better known as Bad Boy Timz has had a solid 2020 and it all began with this hit song ‘MJ’. At the time he released this track, he was relatively unknown to a lot of Nigerians but all that has changed now. For better coverage, he featured Mayorkun on ‘MJ’ remix with banged harder.
Maserati – Olakira
A lot changed for Olakira after he dropped ‘Maserati‘. From being just another good song from an upcoming act, ‘Maserati’ garnered more streams organically on digital platforms and also went into heavy rotation on radio. With a lot more plays it became a certified hit. Davido loved the tune and jumped on the ‘Maserati’ remix further extending the longevity of the song.
Bad Influence – Omah Lay
A young artiste raised in Port Harcourt by the stage name Omah Lay got Nigerians singing to the lyrics of his song ‘Bad Influence‘ word for word whenever the music comes on. ‘Bad Influence’ is a track from his debut EP ‘Get Layd’. He is the biggest breakthrough Nigerian music star we have had this year. The lyric of this song is refreshing, relatable and easy to sing along. It is easily one of our easiest picks for the hottest songs of 2020.
Koroba – Tiwa Savage
After dishing out some low-energy R&B singles earlier in the year, Tiwa Savage got her groove back on ‘Koroba‘. She left the R&B theme for the typical Afropop sound and it was a masterstroke for the singer. From the outset, ‘Koroba’ became an instant sensation among fans and music lovers. The London-produced track is still a favourite taken off her ‘Celia’ album.
Of Lagos – Mayorkun
After initially making his first hit of the year with ‘Geng‘, Mayorkun returned with an even bigger track ‘Of Lagos‘. He worked with DMW in-house music producer Fresh who adapted into the now raving Amapiano sound. It’s really all vibes and ‘gbas gbos’ with scanty lyrics but the groove is undeniable.
Eli – Fireboy DML
Inspired by some classic Chinese movies soundtrack, YBNL/Empire recording artiste Fireboy DML made ‘Eli‘. He sings about a certain Delilah in the most appealing manner, I mean you would want to have a moment with that Delilah. The sound of the tune is infectious like slow poison, you are hooked before you realise. The mid-tempo hit was produced by Pheelz.
Cash App – Bella Shmurda ft. Zlatan, Lincoln
Months after delivering his highly successful extended play ‘High Tension‘, Bella Shmurda struck gold again with the tune ‘Cash App‘. Like every other song that makes reference to Internet scam, Bella Shmurda’s ‘CashApp’ didn’t fall short because it became an instant hit. “O ni Maga Bill Am Small money, Ball Out Usain Bolt, Run Am“, so the lyrics goes and we’re dancing without a care in the world.
Know You – Ladipoe ft Simi
Mavin Records rapper Ladipoe dropped the biggest song of his career in 2020. He teamed up with Simi for the tune which became a viral social media trend and then an actual hit record. Both Ladipoe and Simi were smooth on ‘Know You‘ and it remains a jam and more. The official music video has over 6 million views at the moment on YouTube.
Geng – Mayorkun
Quite early in the year, Mayorkun teamed up with Que Beatz for this smash hit. The beat is made typically for a hip-hop song but Mayorkun killed it nonetheless. He had us throwing ‘Geng’ signs while singing to this song. Due to popular demand, a remix EP was released with one for Naija, Africa and the UK. At this point we knew the Mayor of Lagos came prepared for 2020.
Holy Ground – Davido ft. Nicki Minaj
This one may have arrived towards the end of the year but it makes our list of the hottest songs released in 2020. Davido tapped in the services of American rapper Nicki Minaj for ‘Holy Ground‘, a track taken off his ‘A Better Time’ album. Google enlisted this song among the top 10 most searched songs in Nigeria 2020 which is crazy because it has been only 1 month of release.
Olamide – Loading ft. Bad Boy Timz
YBNL boss Baddo once again did the stuff of legends by releasing another studio album ‘Carpe Diem’. The body of work has some certified bangers in it including ‘Loading‘. Bad Boy Timz gave his very best on the track and it’s evident from the energy you feel when the song comes on. ‘Loading’ is doing some decent numbers on streaming platforms & digital stores.
Olamide – Infinity ft. Omah Lay
Here is another hit record you can’t ignore from the ‘Carpe Diem’ album. With breakout star Omah Lay, Olamide joined forces to make the smash hit produced by P. Prime. It is also one of the most streamed tracks on the album. There is no party if the DJ does not play Olamide’s ‘Infinity‘.
