Sunny Ade, Wizkid inspired me – Singer, SonofUche

A Nigerian-born Afropop singer based in Alaska, United States, Malachi Uche, popularly known as SonofUche, has said that his style of music is largely influenced by the legendary Nigerian juju singer, King Sunny Ade, and the Grammy award-winning singer, Ayo Balogun, popularly known as Wizkid.

“My kind of music is patriotic and motivational. My music draws influence from King Sunny Ade, however, my strongest influence at the moment is Wizkid, because I love his sounds, rhythm, and lyrics, but most importantly, I relate with how the artiste started his career because it’s similar to mine,” he said, speaking with The PUNCH.

“Although I was born in Rivers State, into a family of talented singers and entertainers, from whom I picked an interest in music, I started off singing as a teenager being a member of the church choir. However, my music career took a new turn in 2009 when I joined a live band known as Da Nu Generation Band.

“The band was led by Cornelius Ogar who won the Star Quest Talent show with the group D’Accord in 2006. I performed with DNGB all over Nigeria until 2015 when I left the group and traveled to the United States to further my education.

Speaking further, he said, “I am currently signed to Crescendo Entertainment based in Lagos, Nigeria, and Phinchic Productions, Alberta, Canada. I’ve had several collaborations, and my music has evolved over the years.

“In December 2021, I released my first single, a Christmas medley, titled, “O Holy Night”, which was delivered in a mixture of English and Yoruba languages. The song is quintessential, it captures the mind of every listener. My latest song is Sankolo, which was released in February. It tells the story of an ambitious young person struggling on the streets.”
