Deputy Spokesman of the House of Representatives, Hon. Philip Agbese, welcomed Nigeria’s return to its former national anthem, seeing it as a pathway to the country’s prosperous past, on Wednesday.

Speaking to the press after the 2024 Democracy Day National Assembly joint session, Agbese also praised President Bola Tinubu for his prompt actions on legislative matters.

Agbese commended Speaker Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas for his outstanding leadership and commitment to democratic governance. He noted that within a year, President Tinubu has shown a strong dedication to signing bills into law swiftly, reflecting his administration’s responsiveness to the needs of the citizens.

Agbese highlighted the signing of the National Anthem and Student Loan Bills into law as evidence of President Tinubu’s willingness to collaborate with the legislature to drive meaningful change. According to him, the prompt attention to these bills signals the administration’s focus on delivering tangible results.

“President Tinubu’s approach to legislative matters has created a collaborative environment, fostering open dialogue and constructive engagement between the executive and legislative branches,” Agbese said. “This synergy has led to the swift passage and signing of crucial bills addressing pressing national issues.

“As a parliamentarian, I have seen firsthand the President’s commitment to democratic principles and his openness to diverse perspectives. He has consistently welcomed constructive feedback and suggestions, showing a genuine desire to serve the nation’s best interests.

“The swift signing of the National Anthem and Student Loan Bills, completed in less than 48 hours, illustrates President Tinubu’s commitment to engaging with the legislature and driving meaningful change.

“I’m particularly excited about the return to our old national anthem, which I see as a major step toward regaining the country’s former glory. This anthem, with its familiar lyrics and stirring melody, evokes a sense of nostalgia and patriotism. It reminds us of our history, struggles, and triumphs. Its return is a move that resonates with Nigerians from all walks of life.

“The old national anthem is more than just a song; it’s a symbol of our shared values and aspirations. Its lyrics express our collective desire for unity, peace, and progress. It reminds us of the sacrifices of our founding fathers and national heroes.

“In a country as diverse as ours, the national anthem is one of the few things that bind us together. It’s a common thread in our collective fabric, reminding us of our shared identity and purpose.

“I applaud the decision to return to our old national anthem and urge all Nigerians to embrace this move wholeheartedly. Let us sing our national anthem with pride and passion, and let its lyrics inspire us to work towards a brighter future for ourselves and future generations.”
