Malawi:Activist Kasambara now a free man!

Wapona Kita, his lawyer, said: “Kasambara has signed his papers”, and that: he …” was still in hospital awaiting instructions from doctors. The man who called for president Bingu wa Mutharika’s impeachment is at world-class Mwaiwathu Hospital in Blantyre where he was taken from Zomba Maximum Prison after a heart attack.

He was more than a week earlier arrested for apprehending ‘state thugs’ that confessed to have been sent to petrol bomb his offices in the commercial city.

The ACB director, Alex Namponya, argued on local television broadcaster, Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) that: “…there were a number of complaints following Mr. Kasambara’s granting of bail when there were a number of people languishing since the strike…” by judicial support staff that is dragging over a month now!

Today 22nd February 2012 presidential spokesperson, Dr. Hetherwick Ntaba also argued that Kasambara was still been investigated by police for the bail that saw him walk out to street jubilations in the city, only to be rearrested by over 30 heavily armed police officers.

Kita himself was summoned to police to answer on how he managed to get the bail.

“Our client (Kasambara) has also advised us not to drop contempt of court cases against the police and authorities for ignoring to release him last Thursday after been granted bail by Zomba Magistrate Court’s judge Godfrey Mwase. The matter followed just two days after Blantyre Principle Resident Magistrate Innocent Nebi also granted Kasambara bail on Tuesday.

Local and international outcry on the persistent ‘abuse’ of the law and turning of the country into a police state, and also over Kasambara’s continued incarceration led to his release.
