Finance Workshop – Green Financial Facilities: an accelerator of a climate-resilient and sustainable development in Africa

25 May 2022, 10:40-11:30 EDT (14:40 – 15:30 GMT)

National green banks or green financial facilities  are expected to increase country-driven capacity to access and mobilize climate and environment finance to support nationally determined contributions and related national climate and development goals. National green banks support a pipeline of local bankable sustainable projects by using limited public funds strategically to leverage far greater private investments. These innovative structures have a vital role to play in mobilizing finance for national carbon reduction targets and climate-resilient green development. Green banks are gaining momentum around the world. More and more countries and states are developing these facilities to mobilize funds through a “blended finance model” to leverage and increase private sector climate-related investments.

This workshop will support the exploration of national green finance facilities in Africa. It will create a forum for country representatives, actors from the African financial sector and experts to discuss green finance facilities establishment issues, both shared and country-specific, through a panel discussion.

By drawing from a successful green bank business model, the objective of this workshop is to build green financial capacity in Africa with the view to accelerating action for climate-resilient development.

Policy Workshop – Just Transition: Lessons learned from the developing world

May 26, 2022, at 13:10-14:00 EDT (17:10 – 18:00 GMT)

This workshop will feature case studies of successful just transitions from developing countries. While recognizing that countries and regions have unique challenges and opportunities that may be particular to each, this workshop will serve as a platform to share experiences and lessons on the just transition from the perspective of the global south. Speakers will highlight important aspects of the just transition that are salient to developing nations, including, but not limited to, job creation, social/gender inclusion and financing.

The objective of this workshop is therefore to draw from diverse experiences to provide a better collective understanding of the potential for just transition in the global south context. It will also zero in on the processes and steps required to ensure the successful implementation of just transition.
