China and Lending – Will Africa Suffer From a More Frugal Outlook?

– Advertisement – Prior to the popular ‘Africa Rising’ narrative which gained momentum at the turn of the century, the region’s debt crisis was one of the main topics of developmental economics. This was particularly apparent during the 1980s, when most African nations were trapped in an unsustainable cycle of debt. In fact, Africa’s cumulative debt burden increased from just $8 billion in 1970 to a staggering $174 billion at the end of 1987, or 322% when expressed as a proportion of exported goods and services. China ‘angry’ with Zimbabwe for understating financial support

China has said that Zimbabwe has been understating its financial help to the southern African nation. Zimbabwe’s recently released budget figures ranked China poorly when it comes to foreign countries  supporting it. The country’s Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube said in a budget statement last week that the country received $194m from bilateral donors between January and September this year. Out of that figure Ncube said China provided $3.6m, a figure that was considered meager due to the publicized relations between China and Zimbabwe. But the Chinese embassy in Harare has…

How world powers are distracting Africa from its development

For years Africa has been known as the continent that goes begging for help to develop. That has led to mounting debts that ultimately cripple economies on the continent. The dream of founding leaders of many African countries especially Ghana’s Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was for Africa to unite as a major force to take control of its developmental agenda. On July 7, 2019 African leaders made history by launching the much talked about continental free-trade zone in Niger’s capital, Niamey. It would be the world’s largest free trade area uniting…

The Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) last month said in a report that the illegal trade and felling of rosewood trees has continued despite a ban in place since 2012. It estimates that in the past seven years, some six million rosewood trees had been…
