UN says it has retaken CAR town from rebels

The United Nations has said that it has retaken the town of Bambari in the Central African Republic (CAR) from rebels.
The rebels had seized the town on Tuesday with the government alleging an attempted coup.
The government accused the former president, François Bozizé, of joining up with armed groups in an attempt to stage a coup – something he has denied.
Three of the powerful armed groups that control most of the country’s territory began advancing towards the capital along critical main roads on Tuesday ahead of presidential and legislative elections scheduled for Sunday.
The United Nations had said the push back was under control.

A spokesperson said UN peacekeepers and national security forces are now in control, having pushed the militants back into the bush.
The spokesperson also said civilians who had fled the fighting were starting to return.
Russia and Rwanda have sent hundreds of additional troops to bolster the government, as the rebels try to advance towards the capital Bangui.
