Uganda’s President Museveni takes early lead in vote count

Uganda’s Incumbent president Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has taken an early lead in the presidential election as votes continue to be collated.
Provisional results announced by the Electoral Commission showed that Mr. Museveni, 76, obtained over 1.5 million votes representing 65.02 percent.
His closest rival, the musician-turned politician, Bobi Wine was in second position with over 647,146 votes representing 27.39 percent.
These are results from 8,310 polling stations out of a total of 34,684 polling stations across the country.

More results are expected to be announced later on Friday with less than 50 percent of votes yet to be collated and announced.
Bobi Wine has alleged there was widespread fraud and violence during Thursday’s poll but gave no details of his accusations.
He wrote on Twitter that “despite the wide spread fraud and violence experienced across the country earlier today, the picture still looks good. Thank you Uganda for turning up and voting in record numbers.”

There is heightened security as citizens await the final outcome of the election, with results expected by Saturday.
The chairman of Uganda’s electoral commission, Simon Mugenyi Byabakama, has said the presidential and parliamentary elections were a success.
He told journalists in the capital Kampala, that Ugandans turned up in large numbers and voted peacefully amid the coronavirus pandemic.
President Yoweri Museveni who has been in power since 1986, is seeking a sixth elected.
