Sierra Leone: Floods kill 7, over 8,000 rendered homeless
Disaster Management Officials in Sierra Leone have confirmed the death of at least seven people due to flooding.
Over 8,000 people are also known to have been rendered homeless after torrential rain resulting in massive floods.
Some areas of the country especially the capital, Freetown have been completely over run by water with many property washed away by flood waters.
Some government agencies have been forced to shut down due to the rain and accompanied flood waters.
John Vandy, director of the Disaster Management Office in the National Security Office told AFP on Wednesday that “We can confirm the death of seven people, with 8,000 people severely affected by the flooding in Freetown and other parts of the country since last Friday.”
“The majority of the flood victims are from slum communities and swampy areas,” Vandy said.
There are already efforts ongoing to assist those worst hit by the rain and flooding.
There are fears the heavy rain and flood waters could trigger another major deadly landslide.
In 2017 a similar heavy rain accompanied by flooding led to a landslide that killed at least 300 people and destroyed hundreds of houses and buildings.
Government officials have now asked people to leave flood-prone areas in Freetown after reports of a minor mudslide in the area hit by the 2017 landslide.
