Nigeria: Hundreds of abducted schoolboys released

Over 300 schoolboys kidnapped from a boarding school in Nigeria last week have been freed.

Authorities in the Katsina state were the incident occurred have revealed that those rescued are in a good condition.

In a statement, the authorities said the boys were being taken to the regional capital Katsina City to reunite with their families.

Islamist militant group Boko Haram, which claimed responsibility had hours earlier released a video apparently showing some of the boys.

Although the local authorities believe the video released by Boko Haram was authentic, they believe an impersonators sent a message purportedly coming from the group’s leader Abubakar Shekau.

Reports say many of the boys remain in the hands of their captors.

Armed attacks and kidnappings are rife in north-western Nigeria and are often blamed on bandits, a loose term for gangs operating in the area.

Amnesty International says more than 1,100 people were killed by bandits in the first six months of this year, with the government failing to bring the attackers to justice.
