In a speech spouting western views on gay rights, The UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon over the weekend insulted African leaders by suggesting they ignore long standing traditions and upbringing to support call by the west for the legalization of homosexuality on the continent. To add insult to injury, this was at the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa Ethiopia.
The UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon forgets he won his second term by being supported very strongly by the very leaders he insulted in their own back yard.
Homosexual acts are illegal in most African countries, including key Western allies such as Malawi, Uganda, Nigeria, Kenya, Egypt and Botswana.
Both the US and UK have recently warned they would use foreign aid to push for homosexuality to be decriminalized on the socially conservative continent.
In his speech Ban Ki-moon implied that governments in Africa have illegalized homosexuality against the wishes of their people. He really must not understand Africa to utter such unsupported statements.
Africa is still in its infancy. We should not be distracted by artificial issues created by the West and supported by the leader of the UN who is supposed to be impartial in these matters. African leaders should have called moon on the carpet and told him to take his sanctimonious rumblings back to his masters. It is another thing being insulted in the street but not in your own house.
