On January 1st, Nigerian President Goodluck Jonthan put into place a reform that he and key ministers have been discussing for years: he ended a 20-year old subsidy that kept Nigeria’s petrol prices the lowest on the continent. When Nigerians went back to work on Monday, the 2nd, they discovered that not only had petrol increased from $0.40 to $0.91 a litre, but the cost of private taxis, minibuses and other forms of transit had increased in price as well.

Liberia's president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has been sworn in as the 24th president of the Republic of Liberia. The occasion was held Monday in the Liberia capital Monrovia in front of an array of distinguished personalities that included the leaders of the Liberia's three neighbours - Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Côte d'Ivoire.

Climate change for its mitigation objective is driving a new trend around the world for energy efficiency; this submits that new solutions are sought in direction of power generation and low carbon transport. Nigeria recently benefitted from UK’s Climate Fund for low carbon public transport and energy efficiency. The funds came about to propel Nigeria to further advance in this direction and possibly have Nigeria face a major objective: Power generation.

Gbagbo faces charges of crimes against humanity: ICC

THE HAGUE (AGV) - Ivory Coast's former president Laurent Gbagbo will appear before the International Criminal Court in The Hague within days to face charges of crimes against humanity, the first former head of state to be tried by the ICC since its inception in 2002.
